Fall is happening!

Time to catch up on lots of events happening soon!

All Shook Up--an Elvis Presley extravaganza--opens at the Civic Theatre in Kalamazoo this Friday, September 16, and runs through October 2. Gull Lake alumna Lisa Watson will be stage managing, and Stacy Bartell is properties chief. Info and tickets at the Civic's website.

On Saturday, September 17, Doo Wop Meets Barbershop at 7 p.m. at the Dalton Recital Hall at WMU. Gull Lake music teacher David Woolf will perform with the Mall City Harmonizers' Men's Chorus, and the fabulous prize-winning collegiate group Prestige will provide some hot harmonies, too. Tickets are $12.

The Southwest Michigan Community Harvest Fest always offers great food, fun things to do for every age, and fantastic music. PAC alumna Erica Holcomb will be playing her harp with the traditional Celtic group Whiskey Before Breakfast--which also includes Richlander Dave Marlatt on fiddle. They'll play from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., but the fest continues until 6. It's at Tillers International in Scotts, and admission is $10 a carload.

Festival of the Senses!

Get ready for the biggest art blast of the year! The fourth annual Festival of the Senses will offer the best of the year's student theater, 2-D and 3-D visual art, choir performances, instrumental music, dance, creative writing, and--new this year--film-making. It all happens in one conveniently-located whirl at Gull Lake High School, 7 to 10 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14.

In one wonderful evening, you can enjoy five student-directed one-act plays, a full visual art gallery with cabaret entertainments, vocal and instrumental music ensembles, the return of the GLHS Jazz Band, dance students from the EFA program, student poets, and student film makers sharing their short subjects.

Donations will be accepted at the door to support the Performing Arts Foundation. And your purchase of popcorn and other goodies at the concession stand helps PAF, too.

What a night it will be! If we see you Friday, we bet you'll be back Saturday, with friends!

Open Mic April 30 at RACC

There you'll read the moving and sophisticated story that won the award for Youth/Teen Story: "Mental Issues in the Family" by Gull Lake Middle School student Chloe Mendez, age 13. Chloe is the daughter of Carole McFee Mendez and Juan Alejos Mendez of Richland. She's also a student in the Academically Talented Youth Program. Congratulations and kudos to Chloe!

Traditional Irish Music in Richland

The traditional Irish band Bua will be giving a concert at the Richland Community Hall this Thursday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door ($10, students $5, children free). The Richland Community Hall is at 8985 Gull Road, across the street from Harding's.

Dirty Linen magazine says they “raise the rafters with their playing, charm with their singing, and delight with their contemporary energy.” So we think you'll enjoy them!

2012 brings the end of an era

Gull Lake High School performing arts teacher Robin Nott, longtime advisor and director of the Performing Arts Company, has announced that next year's State Tour Show will be the last he will direct. He'll continue to teach, but someone new will take over the annual competition show.

Robin's farewell show will be a special one: Dune Shadow, which Robin himself adapted from a novel by Nancy Y. Stone, tells a story set in the ill-fated real-life town of Singapore, Michigan, near Saugatuck. No doubt a few PAC alumni will want to plan to return for that occasion!

Endless Summer

January, we laugh at you! We are all going to enjoy "Endless Summer" on Saturday. It's a special benefit concert by the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra at Miller Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 29. The orchestra will conjure up July on the beach with a tribute to the Beach Boys. This is the Gull Lake Area Rotary Club's way to raise funds to eradicate polio around the world. Tickets for the concert are $15, $25 and $35. Tickets for the gala wine and hors d'oeuvres reception to follow are $25. Bryan Charles at Kalamazoo Public Library

It's always fun to "Meet the Author," and in this case, the author happens to be 1992 Gull Lake grad Bryan Charles. You can meet and greet him at the Kalamazoo Public Library (Central Branch), Wednesday, November 3, at 7 p.m. Charles's new memoir about his struggling days looking for work and becoming a writer in New York City, There's a Road to Everywhere Except Where You Came From, is officially published today, November 2, and I'll wager there will be an opportunity to buy a copy--and perhaps even to get it signed?--at Wednesday's event. You might also enjoy picking up a copy of Charles's first book, Grab On to Me Tightly as if I Knew the Way, which is novel but based strongly on the author's adolescence in the Kalamazoo area and thus very recognizable.

At the Halloween Hootenanny, Notified, the singing troupe that features our own Mary Teutsch, will open the show, with three more a cappella groups to follow. Happy Arts in Education Week!

In July, Congress designated the week beginning the second Sunday of September--that's this week!--as Arts in Education Week. The declaration recognizes that "arts education, comprising a rich array of disciplines including dance, music, theatre, media arts, literature, design, and visual arts, is a core academic subject and an essential element of a complete and balanced education
for all students" and goes on to quote Albert Einstein, "After a certain high
level of technical skill is achieved, science and art tend to coalesce in esthetics, plasticity, and form. The greatest scientists are artists as well."

Not to be outdone, in addition to recognizing Arts in Education Week, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm also proclaimed this Youth Arts Week in Michigan, saying, "The involvement of young people in the arts helps them to understand and respect people of diverse populations and cultures as well as help them to communicate through different forms of expression," and that "education in the arts contributes to the overall education of our students by helping them to develop and explore their own creative problem-solving and critical thinking abilities."

So . . . let's celebrate! You can start by joining us at the regular meeting of the GLCS Performing Arts Foundation, Tuesday, September 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Richland Area Community Center!

Come one, come all, to the second annual Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social fundraiser for the Performing Arts Foundation! This year, we'll be scooping ice cream during the Richland Farmers' Market, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, at the Richland Area Community Center. Come into the cool of RACC's kitchen/sunroom area to enjoy delicious Plainwell Ice Cream, hand dipped by your faithful PAF volunteers, and to hear the amazing Leslie Gogel (PAC '02) play her beautiful harp. There may be other surprise musical guests dropping in as well . . . you'll have to be there to hear for yourself! Suggested donation for ice cream is $2 per person or $5 per family. So come out this Wednesday for a great afternoon of fresh fruits and vegetables, gorgeous just-picked flowers, AND ice cream and music!

By the way, the band is on tour right now. Within striking distance of Kalamazoo, you could spot them in Chicago at House of Blues on August 5 and as part of Lollapalooza on August 6.

Richland Art Fair

Okay, this is it! The 38th annual Richland Art Fair happens this Saturday, July 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the village green in the center of Richland. It's an art extravaganza put on yearly by the Gull Lake Area Community Volunteers, who use the proceeds to provide educational, medical, dental, and emergency help to folks within the Gull Lake Community School district.

Be sure to check out special events at many local galleries and stores that day, too, including the Blue Water Gallery and Fabrications.

Friday, July 2, you have a chance to hear Richland lads Jordan Lunardini and Matt Reinhardt with the old gang, Frankie Ballard and Eddie Robinson, at the Stagecoach Barn (8940 N. 32nd Street at M-89/C Avenue), in their Funkberry Jam mode. Starts at 9 p.m., costs $7.

But don't stay out too late if you're planning to run or walk in the Pace for Poverty at 8 a.m. The event, organized by Gull Lake grad Adam Simon and PAF stalwart Jeff Brown, starts by the athletic fields behind Gull Lake Middle School on M-89. If you took my advice about Friday night, you should be done in plenty of time for the 11 a.m. step-off of the Richland 4th of July Parade--note that this year it's on Saturday, July 3. You wouldn't want to miss it, or any of the surrounding fun and food, like the Lions Club chicken barbecue and Richland Presbyterian's pie tent.

Then keep supporting great local music and have fun, too, at the Boiling Pot Music Festival at Arcadia Festival Place downtown, noon to midnight on Saturday and Sunday, July 3 and 4. Cost is $10 each day at the gate, or $15 for both days if you buy in advance.

If you run quickly, you still have an outside chance to see Mary Teutsch in the Farmer's Alley Theatre production of Parade. There are shows at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26, and one more at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 27. (At this writing, the evening shows are shown as sold out on the Farmer's Alley website, but give the box office a call at 343-2727. You never know.) As Mark Wedel wrote in the Gazette, "It’s not the usual light musical fare. It’s the true story of a Jewish Yankee who gets lynched for the murder of a girl in 1913 Georgia. With music by Jason Robert Brown and a book by Alfred Uhry ('Driving Miss Daisy'), the 1998 musical lasted on Broadway for a couple of months, though it did win best book and best score Tony Awards." All who are missing the Barn Theatre this summer will also have a chance to see perennial favorite Scott Burkell. Tickets are $25, $23 for students and seniors.

Almost-summer bonanza

This weekend is a big one for downtown Kalamazoo, with the Art Hop Friday night, the Do-Dah Parade and Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Fair Friday evening and all day Saturday, and the Greek Fest going on throughout. Check out the Richland flavor Saturday night, June 5, at midnight at the Greek Fest, when In Custody will be playing at the Arcadia Creek Festival Place.

Meanwhile, right here in Richland, the colorful artwork of Trish Joseph is at the Little Yellow Frame Shop, and metal artist/blacksmith Holly Fisher's sculptures are at the Blue Water Gallery.

All the while, Wednesday afternoons at the Richland Farmers' Market, held at the Richland Area Community Center from 3:30 to 6:30, usually bring some local music for your toe-tapping enjoyment as you shop.

By the way, the Richland Area Community Center is offering kids' music classes, including a Jumping Beans Kindermusik group and a recorder class. Check out the website for more info.

Festival of the Senses--now with 25% more senses!

Well, at least more arts than ever! This year, the Festival of the senses had added modern dance and a performance by the dynamic original poetry duo Kinetic Affect.

The school's allied fine arts will team up with the Gull Lake Performing Arts Foundation and the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation to present the fourth annual spring student showcase of young artists. Five student-produced one-act plays, a visual art gallery, vocal music ensembles and solos, instrumental music ensembles and solos, two original dance pieces, and six creative writing presentations will offer an evening of wonderful entertainment for our community on Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, from 7 to 10 p.m.

This year's dance addition will feature Patricia Palasko's Education For The Arts (EFA) student dance class, presenting two original dance pieces. The works will be choreographed by Palasko especially for the festival. The EFA dance class is offered during the school day at GLHS, drawing students from around the area, and we are very fortunate to have this popular program housed here in our district.

The powerful performance poetry duo Kinetic Affect will present their consciousness-raising work in a community performance on Friday night of the festival only. Kinetic Affect treats the listener to the art of the live spoken word. Kinetic Affect’s residency in the Gull Lake Community Schools has been underwritten by the Gull Lake Performing Arts Foundation, the Gull Lake Community Schools Foundation, and the Gull Lake Teachers Association. Kinetic Affect will be presenting three student concerts, a poetry master class, and their community concert on Friday evening, during their two-day residency at Gull Lake.

The following staff are involved in this year’s festival: Robin Nott and Laura Denick (theatre), Randy Walbridge and Carolyn Massey (visual art), Floy Latham and Michele Chabitch (band), David Woolf (choir), Matt Hawkins (creative writing), and Patricia Palasko (dance). The fine arts staff and students of GLHS wish to thank all who donated to our foundations for continuing to enrich our lives through arts and cultural activity.

Performances will be Friday, May 14, and Saturday, May 15, starting at 7 p.m. All events will be held in the Gull Lake High School performing arts wing and cafeteria. Donations at the door will be accepted for the Performing Arts Foundation.

Ben was a member of the Gull Lake High School Performing Arts Company back in the day. He's had some major obstacles thrown his way since then, but he's accomplishing great work for others. Fun with the Gilmore

It's almost time for the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, and you can enjoy a preview right here in Richland, thanks to the Gilmore for Kids program. The wonderful pianist Peter Miyamoto will be doing an in-school program for kids on Tuesday, April 20 . . . and in the evening, he'll do a public performance, "Piano Power," open to and fun for all but especially geared for elementary and middle school students. Day of Silence Art Show

This Friday, April 16, from 7 to 9 p.m., all are invited to the Richland Area Community Center for the opening reception for a student art exhibit called "Doors." The artwork, literally painted and collaged on full-sized doors, was created by members of the Gull Lake area Gay-Straight Alliance and other students as part of their observance of the National Day of Silence. On that day--which is this Friday--students maintain silence for the school day as a way of drawing attention to name-calling, bullying, and harassment of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students. Students have been working on their art projects at RACC for the last two weeks as part of a workshop created by writer Jacquelyn Taylor and RACC executive director Bonnie Feldkamp. The workshop was funded by a Kalamazoo Community Foundation Changemakers grant. Admission to the exhibit and reception is free, and the punch and cookies will be flowing like . . . well, punch and cookies! Do come out and support these young artists!

The Kalamazoo Gazette is full of news of Gull Lake grads. First, a reminder to go see Mary Teutsch in the Civic's powerful production of Arthur Miller's play All My Sons can be found in this glowing review. The play is scheduled to continue at the Parish Theatre through April 11. Tickets and info are here.

Then news of two events that we are very sorry to have missed. One Mr. Adam Carter apparently did a star turn as Liza Minelli on April Fool's Day at the Epic Bistro. We can live the moment vicariously through the Gazette's photos. It was all in aid of Fancy Pants Theatre, of which Adam is one of the founders.

And, finally, there was a big story in the April 3 Hometown Gazette about another Performing Arts Company alum, Kaytee Vande Streek. Kaytee helped to stage a fabulous old-school vaudeville show in East Lansing on April 2. At this writing, there's no link on the Gazette's mLive website, but I'll add one if I find one.

That's right: This year's Glitter Variety Show is the 20th annual edition! Happy birthday, Glitter! You've put some pretty bright Gull Lake High School lights onstage these past many years, and Saturday, March 20, promises to bring out some more. The show is at 7 p.m. at Comstock Auditorium. Fancy Pants

Delighted that the old Whole Art Studio space at 246 N. Kalamazoo Mall will continue to host creative performances. Its resurgence as Studio 246 is thanks to Fancy Pants Theater, newly founded by a partnership that includes Gull Lake alumnus Adam Carter. Their first production will be Board Fold: A Tale of Retail by local playwright Adam Pasen, directed by Adam Carter. It's a farce set in a clothing store, and rife with sexual tension, so perhaps not for the kiddies. Adults, you can see the show February 24 - 28 at 8 p.m., tickets $10. Love That Valentine's Weekend

Lots of options for you--and perhaps your Valentine, too--this weekend!

First, there's a brand new production of Jesus Christ Superstar produced by Center Stage Theatre at Comstock Auditorium--with Gull Lake's own Lisa Watson stage managing. See the show at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, February 11-13, or at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 14. Tickets are $12 ($10 for students and seniors), available at the door or online.

Even if you go on Friday, you could first stop in at the opening reception for Blue Water Gallery's new show . . . see the previous posting about that.

And, finally, you'll want to take your Valentine--whether it's your true love, your neighbor, or a friend of any age--to the My Funny Valentine afternoon at the Richland Area Community Center, 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 14. We do want to pass on word about the Performing Arts Company's Saturday performance at regional competition. The group will be onstage with Smoking Lesson this Saturday, February 13, at Forest Hills East High School in Ada, Michigan. They go at 9 a.m. (!), but it's always worth sticking around to see the other shows. Admission is free, and the kids always appreciate the support. Break a leg, PAC!

Escape to Blue Water Gallery

The Blue Water Gallery has been closed since Christmas, but it's open again and holding a brand new show, "Winter Escape." There are new works by all of the Blue Water Gallery artists, as well as some artists who are new to the gallery, including Elaine Kauffman, Helen Kleczynski, Barry Nelson, Amy Zane, Fred Zemlick, Dave Middleton, Marian Heibel Richardson, Char Short and Scott Noppen. PAC Tour Show Opens at Home

This is the weekend--your chance to see Gull Lake High School's Performing Arts Company perform their annual state tour show here at home. You can see the drama Black Water in the Cafetorium at (please note!) Gull Lake Middle School on Friday and Saturday, February 5 and 6 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, February 7 at 2 p.m. Admission is $6, $3 for students. Those who saw the show at district competition last weekend--where it won a number of citations for excellence, in addition to the opportunity to move on to regional competition--say that it is a powerful and intense drama.

If you miss this weekend's performances, you have another chance to see the show when PAC takes it to regional competition on Saturday, February 13, at a location to be announced. And, if PAC qualifies there, they will move on to state finals at Midland Center for the Arts in Midland, MI, on Friday and Saturday, February 19 and 20. Admission to the competition performances is free.

Hoot Owls at Cooper's Glen

You can see--and, moreover, hear--the great bluegrass, gospel, and old-timey music of the Hoot Owls at Cooper's Glen Music Festival on Saturday, January 23, at 1 p.m. You'll recognize at least one of those Owls as our own talented Robin Nott. News from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, via Ken Holda:

Due to popular demand, the Civic has added four performances to the Spelling Bee schedule. They are:

Sunday, January 31 at 2
Friday, February 5 at 8
Saturday, February 6 at 8
Sunday, February 7 at 2

Each performance, 4 audience members are selected to compete onstage in the spelling bee. Right now, the plan is to select these people about 40 minutes before the show starts. If you want a chance to get onstage, please arrive early and sign up.

It's easy to get in the holiday spirit, whether you're at the Tiny Tim or the Scrooge end of the spirit spectrum. Gull Lake alumna Lisa Watson is stage managing the fun family musical cabaret Forever Plaid: Plaid Tidings, now through December 27 at the Farmers Alley Theatre. Enjoy dessert and coffee along with some great holiday harmonies in the intimate Farmers Alley space downtown.

If you're a little more on the adult/cynical side, you'll enjoy seeing Gull Lake's Adam Carter as one of the title characters in The Eight: Reindeer Monologues at the Whole Art Theatre mainstage in the Epic Center through December 19. As the Whole Art puts it: "Accusations, rumors and all-out attacks are flying fast and furious around Santa's toyshop this holiday season. Told in a series of witty monologues, each of Santa's flying hoofed critters confesses the truth behind the reported shocking allegations. The jolly old elf himself is at the top of the naughty list, and you won't believe what his trusted reindeer have to say. If you've had your fill of traditional, feel-good Christmas fare, leave the kids at home and enjoy an antler-packed evening of acid-tongued reindeer."

Time for Wassailing!

It's December and that can only mean . . . Wassailing in Richland! Come out for more fun than ever this Thursday, December 3, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in and near the village square in Richland. There will be treats of all kinds, and music galore. On the village green, you can hear the Gull Lake Middle School Band, the Ryan Chorus, the Middle School Minors, and the High School Choir. After 6:30, groups from the Gull Lake High School Band will play at the Richland Community Library. At the Little Yellow Frame Shop and Gallery, enjoy the seasonal harmonies of the Kalamazoo Barbershop Chorus. The choir will be practicing inside First Presbyterian Church. And students from the Daisies Dance Studio will perform at the Library at 5:30 and 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, Richland merchants will be open and offering deals and treats, Santa will be at the Community Hall, the Scouts will be selling Christmas trees, the Presbyterian Church will have an alternative gift market going on, and there will be live reindeer in the park. The whole festive evening is sponsored by the Richland Area Business Association. Happy holidays!

Guest artists: Robin reported that Kinetic Affect will come to Gull Lake High School and Middle School as spoken word artists this spring, doing two performances at each school and conducting a workshop with a creative writing class. Robin will apply for grants from PAF and the GL Schools Foundation.

PAF Promise: Robin has received 10 requests for “pay for play” scholarships so far; he expects a few more by the time payment is due—around November 23, when PAC’s state tour show auditions begin—and will submit a request to PAF at that time. PAF has received several donations in response to, some specifically designated for, this need and will be able to provide the scholarships.

PAC Tour Show: This year’s show's playwright Julia Jordan has approved the Performing Arts Company’s shortening the play for festival use, and also has kindly asked that her royalty be donated; it will go to PAF.

Grant requests for pizza for an informational/recruitment meeting for PAC’s state tour show on November 17 and for materials for the successful Scream Team event at Halloween were approved.

Katherine Joslin, professor of English at WMU, will read from her new book, Edith Wharton and the Making of Fashion. And Daneen Wardrop, also a professor of English at WMU, will read from her new book, Emily Dickinson and the Labor of Clothing.

This evening of literature and fashion will start with a reception at 6 p.m. in the Blue Water Gallery, 8860 N. 32nd Street, in the Clocktower Green. The readings will begin at 7 p.m. in, appropriately, the classroom of Fabrications.

Chef John Merucci of Brook Lodge will offer a delicious entree made from local ingredients, the farmers of the Richland Farmers' Market will offer tastes of their homegrown and homemade goodies, a century-old cider press will be in operation, the Hoot Owls will play bluegrass, old-timey and gospel favorites, and there will be a pick-your-prize raffle going on throughout the evening. A Sunday Afternoon of Barbershop Harmony, Ice Cream, and Art

It's August, so it must be time for . . . Americana in August!

What could be more delightful than a summer Sunday afternoon of barbershop harmony and an old-fashioned ice cream social? Come on out and join the fun this Sunday, August 16, from 2 to 5 at the Richland Area Community Center, 9400 East CD Avenue. The Kalamazoo Barbershop Chorus and its offshoot quartets will provide the sweet sounds of barbershop. Performing Arts Foundation volunteers will be scooping the ice cream--cold, delicious, local Plainwell Ice Cream. And the Center will be exhibiting its new collection of prints of classic American works of art. The Picturing America collection is the result of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the images will be used by Gull Lake teachers at all levels and in all curriculum areas to enrich their classroom teaching. Sunday is the first opportunity for teachers and the community to view the entire collection.

Downtown plays with Gull Lake connections

This is the last weekend for Forbidden Broadway at the Whole Art Theatre in the Epic Center. It's a hilarious, satirical, but loving tribute to Broadway musical theatre, featuring Adam Carter. Catch it at 8 p.m. on July 24 and 25. Details at the Whole Art's website.

Lisa Watson is stage managing Blue's Clues Live! at the Farmers Alley Theater downtown, July 24 through August 8, part of Farmers Alley's Children's Series. July 18 Double Whammy: Art Fair and Garden Show

Busy Saturday! From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 18, area artists will be showing and selling their work on the Richland Village Green, in the heart of the Village of Richland. This is the 37th annual Richland Art Fair sponsored by the Gull Lake Area Community Volunteers. Profits from the fair fund some of the Volunteers' programs, which provide educational, medical, dental and emergency funds to help individuals in the Gull Lake Community School district.

And, on your way to or from the Art Fair, be sure to stop in at the Richland Area Community Center, 9400 East CD Avenue (the post office road), between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to see gorgeous plants, flowers, and arrangements at the "Come Bloom With Us" flower show being held by the Seedlings Garden Club. Theatricals for tweens at the libe

Barbershop Harmony

Gull Lake High School's vocal music teacher, David Woolf, will be performing with his prizewinning barbershop quartet, Go 4 It!, at 7 p.m. this Thursday, June 25, at the Amphitheater at Celery Flats in Portage (rain site: Hayloft Theatre). Richland has its own Art Hop on the second Friday of each month. This month, a new show opens at the Blue Water Gallery on Friday, June 12. "Summer Bouquet" features floral and garden pastels by Roseann Maguire. The opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. will offer wine, punch, and appetizers, plus music in the outdoor sculpture garden by local musician Larry Lowis. The Gallery is located at 8860 N. 32nd Street, in the Clocktower Green complex.

Speaking of that pleasant spot, the Clocktower Green Summer Music Series starts on June 18, with live outdoor music every Thursday from 6:30 to 9 p.m., at Clocktower Green. Enjoy!

The Young Artists of Gull Lake exhibit continues through Friday, June 5. Thursday: A good cause at Whole Art

This Thursday, May 21, at 8 p.m., the Whole Art Theatre will give a special performance of Dog Sees God to benefit the Kalamazoo and Richland chapters of PFLAG (Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays). Admission for this performance will be only $10, half of which will go to PFLAG. If you ever wondered what happened to the Charlie Brown gang when they hit adolescence, this dark comedy throws it all at you, from bullying to drugs, violence, issues of sexual identity, and even suicide. Come out on Thursday night to see our own Adam Carter on stage, and to support a great cause. If you can't make it to the benefit, regular performances continue through May 23, with tickets $20. The Center will be set up as a coffeehouse, with comfy seating and the appropriate beverages supplied by Biggby's. Local writers, musicians, comedians, and storytellers will take turns entertaining. Festival of the Senses!

Okay, this is a huge DO-NOT-MISS! The Festival of the Senses, this year's edition of the Spring Showcase of the Arts at Gull Lake High School, will be in full swing this Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Suggested donation is $5, children $3. The gala evening will include the Performing Arts Company's One-Act Play Festival, fabulous vocal and instrumental music of all kinds, and visual arts on display in and around the high school cafeteria. Stage Door

Be sure to catch our own Hannah Homnick in the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre's current production of Stage Door. Gull Lake alumna Stacy Bartell is properties master, too.

Theater buffs will love the backstage drama and comedy in this classic. The Civic says, "It's often said that there's a broken heart for every light on Broadway. Modeled on the actual Rehearsal Club in Manhattan, this fast paced American classic traces the hopes, dreams and disappointments of aspiring actresses living in the Footlights Club, a popular boarding house for young theatricals. The adventures of these talented young women and their gentlemen callers unfold as we get to know the dancers, actors, and waitresses who are looking for their first big break. Written by Kalamazoo native Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman, Stage Door offers a wonderfully nostalgic look at the Broadway of a bygone era." The show runs through April 25. Wow, one minute it's winter and things are all boring, and the next minute we're springing into action!

First, a catch-up on congratulating Richland photographer Mary Whalen on winning the grand prize at the annual Area Show at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts! The Area Show showcases some of the best art produced in a 14-county region of West Michigan, as selected this year by guest juror Larry Fink. Mary's ambrotype titled "Man" was chosen from more than 600 pieces initially submitted for the show. You can see the show through April 26, and check the Gazette coverage here.

March 20, 21, 27, 28, and April 3 and 4 at 8 p.m.: When Pigs Fly at the Whole Art Theatre at the Epic Center (359 S. Kalamazoo Mall) features Gull Lake alumnus Adam Carter in a fun and funny musical revue. Tickets are $22, seniors $18, students $14.

Sure, maple syrup is an art form! Watch how sap gets boiled down to syrup and have a taste of the fresh stuff at Maple Syrup Open House at Kellogg Forest on Saturday, March 21, from noon to 5 p.m. Cost is $1 per person. Maple syrup and maple candy will also be on sale.

Check out lots of Gull Lake Community Education offerings in the arts realm. There are classes in ballroom dance for all ages, hip hop for pre-teens, teens and adults, sewing for 10- to 12-year-olds, cartoon drawing for all ages, DIY wedding flower design, and more.

All Ears Theatre will hold open auditions for three radio plays on March 23 and 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Epic Center. The performances will be recorded at First Baptist Church in Kalamazoo during May, and will be broadcast later on WMUK-FM. No previous experience is needed. Pat Ex and Denise Fletcher create amazing works of art from metal, and they're the centerpiece of "Metalmorphosis," the show that runs March 13 through April 4 at the Blue Water Gallery, 8860 N. 32nd Street, at Clocktower Green. Other artists include Amy Culp, Bobbie Peters, Char Short, and Meg Tank, presenting "Green Jewelry: Reuse, recycle, repurpose." There's an artists' reception at the gallery tonight, Friday, March 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Those awesome Gull Lake bands

This news from Kim Ford via the Gull Lake Fine Arts Alumni group on Facebook (which you're encouraged to join, if you partake of the Facebook at all): On Friday the Gull Lake Middle School Band went to Portage for the Middle School District Band Festival. The 7th Grade Band received straight 1s, and the 8th Grade got straight 1s in performance and a 2 in sightreading for an overall 1. This means that all Gull Lake bands received 1s at Festival, and all qualify for State. Congratulations, all! Our bands are indeed awesome.

And, by the way, all Gull Lake Fine Arts alumni--whether you're on Facebook or not--there will be an all-arts-alumni reunion on the afternoon of Sunday, May 3. Mark your calendars now, and watch for more info!

A call to help the arts in Michigan!

Did you read our local friend Tim Putney's Viewpoint in the Gazette on March 3? In it, Tim addresses Governor Granholm's proposal to cut state arts funding entirely--yes, entirely--for 2010, and he discusses the terrible effects this would have on our state and its economy. If you haven't read the whole article (it's short but shocking), please go here now.

And then there IS something you can do! The budget has not yet been passed by the legislature, so supporters of the arts still have a voice. I reprint the last couple of paragraphs of Tim's Viewpoint:

"Rejecting the governor's recommendations to eliminate this funding is possible with your help. Our state Legislature will soon be making some very tough decisions, and they do have the power to restore our funding.

"State Sen. Tom George will be a significant player in this process, and I hope you will choose to contact him at sentgeorge@senate.michigan.gov., in Lansing (866) 305-2120, and in Kalamazoo is (269) 226-0124. Please also contact Gov. Granholm at (517) 373-3400 or fax (517 )335-6863."

Musical Extravaganza at Comstock

If you can believe it, the Center Stage Theatre--previously known to most of us as Comstock Community Theatre--is 35 years old, and it's celebrating with a fabulous musical revue this weekend. Among other Gull Lake luminaries, Mary Jasiak and Lisa Watson will be performing numbers from some of your favorite musicals. The 35th Anniversary Celebration Showcase runs this Friday, February 13, and Saturday, February 14, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $8 and can be purchased online at the Center Stage Theatre's website or at the door. The show is in the Colt Center at Comstock Community Auditorium, 2107 North 26th Street.

Valentine's Day is on its way . . . What could be more romantic than a lovely Sunday afternoon spent listening to gorgeous piano music, followed by a fancy tea reception? On Sunday, February 8, pianist Doug Decker will perform at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Richland, on the Village Green in the heart of Richland. A freewill offering will be taken, and the tea afterwards is free. The concert is part of the Village Green Arts series.

Local Heroes

If you've attended any Gull Lake High School or Middle School event in the last--oh, just about ever--from plays to track meets to football games to--well, just about anything--then you've seen Jack and Marcia Sizer. They're always there, taking wonderful photographs, rooting for the kids, and offering support to the adults. Then, as often as not, you'll see them quietly handing kids or parents prints of those photos--priceless keepsakes of great times in their lives. For dozens of Performing Arts Company productions, they've provided photographs for the archives. All of this they do quietly, and usually at their own expense.

On Friday, January 30, at a home performance of PAC's state tour show, Bamboozled!, the Sizers were recognized as true Local Heroes with the Department of Fine Arts' annual award. Robin Nott presented them with a plaque on stage before the show began--and before the Sizers returned to their cameras to continue their wonderful work. Thank you, Marcia and Jack!

Bamboozled! and Baker's Wife

Two theatricals not to be missed:

The Gull Lake High School Performing Arts Company presents its annual state competition show, Bamboozled!, in three home performances on Friday, January 30, Saturday, January 31 at 8 p.m., and on Sunday, February 1 at 2 p.m. Take special note that, because the competition requires a large stage, these home shows will take place at the Gull Lake Middle School cafetorium. You'll be charmed and entertained by this traditional Renaissance comedy in the commedia dell'arte style. To add to the wonder of the performances and technical ingenuity, I hear the costumes are fabulous!

This is PAC's eighteenth year going to state competition, sponsored by the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association. Home performances will replicate the competition situation, in which the company must move all scenery and props onto a bare stage, perform the play, and completely clear the stage again, all in a total of 45 minutes or less. It's always an amazing spectacle as well as a great performance.

If you're free to travel, the show will be performed in district competition at Greenville High School on January 24, in regional competition at Olivet High School on February 7, and, if Gull Lake wins there, they'll perform at state finals at Chelsea High School the weekend of February 13 and 14. Watch this space for news!

Another theatrical must for your calendar: The Baker's Wife opens January 30 at the Civic's Parish Theatre and runs through February 15 2009. Gull Lake alumna Mary Teutsch plays the title character. Says the Civic: "Old world charm permeates every moment of this bittersweet, wise and gently romantic fable of life and love in southern France. The bickering residents of a small Provencal town at last find peace and contentment in the heavenly bread of the newly arrived baker and his attractive young wife. But when she is lured away by the attentions of a handsome young gigolo, the middle-aged baker is heartbroken and loses all zest for life and baking, throwing the community into chaos. If you're looking for a musical that is warm, mature, intelligent and melodic, you're sure to enjoy The Baker's Wife. But be warned, you should only see it if you're prepared to fall in love. Celtic Concert and Tea Report!

If you weren't able to be at the Richland Area Community Center in person on December 28, we're sorry to tell you that you missed one of the most delightful afternoons in a long time. PAF's Celtic Concert and Tea was a great success. Even the weather cooperated to let more than 85 people attend the concert by Erica Holcomb, who played the Scottish harp and a guitar and sang songs both traditional and original.

Afterwards, Jeri Holcomb of Tudor House Tea served an amazing array of treats and delicious teas on fine china and white tablecloths. It was quite a day. Jeri had also donated a beautiful tea gift basket, which was raffled, and copies of Erica's two CDs were sold. Huge thanks to all the Holcombs for sharing their musical and culinary gifts, and for doing all the hard work for the event. Rick Holcomb designed and printed the beautiful posters and tickets, so many thanks to him, too.

Between ticket sales and raffle tickets, the event raised just over $1,000 for the Performing Arts Foundation. That will go a long way towards arts education projects in our schools. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported PAF!

Thanks, too, to all the volunteers who helped it to happen. Robin and Sarah Nott, Pat, Louise and Emily Hanavan, Jan and Lisa Watson, Murray Cooper, and of course the Holcombs all pitched in. Even some of the folks who attended as guests wound up lending a hand. Thank you! And we are grateful to the Richland Area Community Center for hosting the event--and for hosting PAF's monthly meetings all year long.

One last note, speaking of PAF's monthly meetings: Our longtime regular meeting day has been changed. The new meeting time for PAF will be 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month, starting this month. So our next meeting is not this week but will instead be on Tuesday, January 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Richland Area Community Center. See you then!

Lexibaby

It's already all over the Gazette, but don't forget to put it on your calendar: The world premiere of the new movie Lexibaby happens this weekend at the State Theatre in Kalamazoo, fruit of the labors of Gull Lake alumnus Jon Petro, who directed the film. See it this Friday and Saturday night, January 2 and 3, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $13 at the State Theatre box office or through Ticketmaster. The film's intertwined stories deal with themes of violence and its effects. You'll definitely recognize some of the filming locations: First Presbyterian Church in Richland, the Blackhawk Grill, Bronson Hospital, and other local landmarks. It's not rated, but the film does contain violence and adult language. More details at the film's website.

Celtic Concert and Tea, Sunday, December 28

I know this is a busy week, but picture yourself NEXT weekend, after the eggnog is all gone and everyone is still hanging around the house going stir crazy. It's Sunday, December 28. Just an empty, gray day. But wait!

You can cheer up everyone--young, old, and all others--with a festive afternoon at the Richland Area Community Center, where Erica Holcomb will be playing Celtic harp and singing songs both traditional and original. And, after the concert, there will be a fabulous, festive tea, including little sandwiches, scones, and pastries, served by Tudor House Tea. Tickets for the whole event cost $15 and benefit the Performing Arts Foundation. Yes, us! No, not us personally, but all the great arts education projects we support.

Erica graduated from Gull Lake High School in 2005, studied traditional music in Appalachia, and then moved to Edinburgh, Scotland, where she's continuing her studies. She is best known for her skills on the clarsach, or Scottish harp, but she also plays mandolin and guitar. The event celebrates the release of her new CD, Birds, Ghosts and Lifeboats, which will be available for sale at the concert, along with her previous CD, Eightsongs.

Okay, there's almost too much going on for any one person to get to, so let's split up and cover all this territory, because it's all fabulous.

For starters, this weekend is your last chance for two stage treats:

Willy Wonka, an extravaganza made possible in part by assistant stage manager Lisa Watson and property master Stacy Bartell, is at the Civic Theatre downtown. Call the box office (269-343-1313) or check their website.

Familiar Faces and Peculiar Places, four one-act plays by different authors, features one directed by Adam Carter. Shows are at 11 p.m. at the Whole Art Studio, 246 N. Kalamazoo Mall. Tickets are only $5, which includes coffee and doughnuts.

"More Small Work," the Blue Water Gallery's holiday show, opens Friday, December 12, with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. and continues through January 7. Note, though, that the gallery will be closed from December 28 to January 4. It's located at 8860 N. 32nd Street.

Saturday, December 13, 'round 9 p.m., Jordan Lunardini plays blues at the Stagecoach Barn, behind the Blackhawk Grill at that intersection of M-89, M-43, and C Avenue.

Insider's tip: On Sunday, December 14, at the First Presbyterian Church of Richland, veteran New York Metropolitan Opera basso Kenneth Young will sing a selection from Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Trumpeter Mike McMinn will accompany him, and that's also the day that the church choir presents its special annual festival of Christmas music and the spoken word. That's all during the regular church service at 9:45 a.m.

And Monday, December 15, the Gull Lake High School Choir sings for the season at the High School cafeteria at 7 p.m.

Richland will be decked out for the holidays on Thursday, December 4, when the village's 35th annual Wassailing Night begins at 5:30 p.m. All the businesses will be offering goodies and activities for all ages, and, in the square, you'll have a chance to hear almost all of our schools' fabulous musical ensembles: GLHS Band, GLHS Choir, the Middle School Minors, the Ryan Chorus, and the Ryan Singers. The festivities continue until 8 p.m. and are sponsored by the Richland Area Business Association.
